The date was February 23, 1996. With the conclusion of the afternoon classes, the sky was the limit on what was happening in the city of Orangeburg, South Carolina. Seems like everyone had something to do! Some people chilled & enjoyed the last days of Black History Month. Me: I had my to work my part job at UPS. But there were 73 young female students at South Carolina State University who were about to make a move that would change their lives forever.
By the conclusion of the day, the undergraduate chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated introduced those aforementioned ladies as new sorors into their organization. Those individuals went down in history as the 73 Soul Stirring Sisters and became members of one of the most popular group of “cool kid” on the yard during my days of matriculation. The Sisters of Delta eventually walked out of the doors of SCSU to greet the world in various, powerful ways. They would go on to hold many professional titles that varied from the list of Attorney, Accountants, Educators, Principals, Physician (MD), Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioner, Entrepreneurs, Financial Professionals, Engineer, and Speech Language Pathologists (to mention a few). To say THEY MADE MOVES is putting it lighly.
Since 1996, the group has remained connected via in person, Sister Circle meetups and virtual Zoom activities. In 2016, the line celebrated 20 years in Montego Bay, Jamaica and with a Homecoming tailgate celebration. In 2021, they decided on a photo shoot. 17 Sorors tracked back to where it all started & we had some fun creating magic. Here are a few sparks:
In true Bulldog Style, there were some ladies who wanted individiual pictures. I was there for all of that! I wanted the SMOKE. Here is a link to the images created: 73 Soul Stirring Sisters session.
It was good to see those teenagers turn into adults 25 years, after they had entered their chosen Greek Letter organization. I will always remember my collegiate time with those ladies but more than anything, I won’t forget how they remained true to SCSU and made numerous marks on this world that all alums should be proud of. HAIL HAIL!
